Ferrer, José – Ejercicio

José Ferrer (13 March 1835 — 7 March 1916) was a Spanish guitarist and composer. As well as being a respected teacher, he also composed compelling pieces in the Spanish style. This Ejercicio is an exercise in creating a singing bass melody. Much like bass and baritone singers, the effect is masculine, and powerful. You'll learn to emphasize the important parts, and play down the "background" parts. With a little practice, you'll have a beautiful piece with a low, moving melody. This provides truly effective contrast to most other guitar pieces, which feature higher melodies. Perhaps most importantly, the character and charisma of the Ejercicio lies in it's upbeat and joyful nature. While generally hopeful, it's also at times pensive, giving a more complex emotional palette. Overall, Ejercicio evokes moods and attitudes that are distinctly human and common, making it easy for listeners (and us as players) to connect with.

“Is This Course for Me?”

jose ferrer guitar composer

José Ferrer in 1902

José Ferrer’s Ejercicio is a beautiful piece that offers constructive lessons for you if you are a beginning or intermediate player. It offers a detailed study of a melodic bass line (played with the right hand thumb), contrasted with colorful accompaniment using the right hand fingers.  If you haven’t explored this scenario deeply, this is a wonderful opportunity for that. TAB is included, so if your music-notation reading is not great, you can always consult the TAB. Also, you could also use this as excellent practice for reading notes that are low on the staff.

This course is at the EARLY INTERMEDIATE level. This means that most of the notes will be in the lower positions, with occasional notes moving into higher positions (usually just on the 1st string). The rhythms are mostly simple. Chords are mostly common, open-position. TABs are included for an alternative to music notation. For more advanced players, pieces in this level can be used as a study to improve learning, memorization, and phrasing techniques.

Allen Mathews

Hi, I’m Allen Mathews.

I started as a folk guitarist, then fell in love with classical guitar in my 20’s. Despite a lot of practice and schooling, I still couldn’t get my music to flow well. I struggled with excess tension. My music sounded forced. And my hands and body were often sore. I got frustrated, and couldn’t see the way forward. Then, over the next decade, I studied with two other stellar teachers – one focused on the technical movements, and one on the musical (he was a concert pianist). In time, I came to discover a new set of formulas and movements. These brought new life and vitality to my practice. Now I help guitarists find more comfort and flow in their music, so they play more beautifully.
