Mozart – Eine Kleine Nachtmusik

The real name of this piece is Serenade no.13 in G.  But in his personal notebook, Mozart referred to this as Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.  And the name has stuck.  "A Little Night Music" in English, this piece has become one of the best known and most-loved of all Mozart's works.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote this in 1787 when he was 31 years old.  He died just 4 years later, and it was not published in his lifetime.  His wife, Constanze, sold the suite containing Nachtmusik along with many others to a publisher in 1799.  It is supposed she was very much in need of cash.  It wasn't until 1827 that this tune was performed in public, 40 years after it was written.

This arrangement is of the main theme only. It is set for early-intermediate-level classical guitar.  This course addresses slurs, musical upbeats, and other expressive elements of the piece.  The course materials include both notation and TABs, though the course videos use only the notation.

Course Level: EARLY INTERMEDIATE

This course is at the EARLY INTERMEDIATE level. This means that most of the notes will be in the lower positions, with occasional notes moving into higher positions (usually just on the 1st string). The rhythms are mostly simple. Chords are mostly common, open-position. TABs are included for an alternative to music notation. For more advanced players, pieces in this level can be used as a study to improve learning, memorization, and phrasing techniques.

Allen Mathews

Hi, I’m Allen Mathews.

I started as a folk guitarist, then fell in love with classical guitar in my 20’s. Despite a lot of practice and schooling, I still couldn’t get my music to flow well. I struggled with excess tension. My music sounded forced. And my hands and body were often sore. I got frustrated, and couldn’t see the way forward. Then, over the next decade, I studied with two other stellar teachers – one focused on the technical movements, and one on the musical (he was a concert pianist). In time, I came to discover a new set of formulas and movements. These brought new life and vitality to my practice. Now I help guitarists find more comfort and flow in their music, so they play more beautifully.
