Machaut, Guillaume (14th cen.) – Virelai: Quant Je Suis Mis

A "virelai" is a style of poem that was popular in the medieval times.  The meter of the poem was variable, but they did ultimately rhyme, and contain 3 lines per stanza. This tune, Quant Je Suis Mis, is no exception.  It has 3 lines, and can be repeated as many times as you like.  The title translates to, As I Am Laid.   Guillaume de Machaut was the most important composer and poet of his time, and wrote 39 "virelais", as well as hundreds of poems and songs in other styles.  He worked for several lords, ladies, adventurers and conquerors, as well as Pope Benedict XII.  And in addition to numerous battles and excursions, Machaut survived the Black Death that devastated Europe.

Course Level: BEGINNER

This course is at the BEGINNER level. This means that the notes will all be in the open position (so no moving up and down the neck). The rhythms are simple (mostly quarter and 8th notes) and well-explained. And any chords used are common ones. TABs are included for an alternative to music notation. For more advanced players, pieces in this level can be used as a study to improve phrasing and memorization techniques.

Allen Mathews

Hi, I’m Allen Mathews.

I started as a folk guitarist, then fell in love with classical guitar in my 20’s. Despite a lot of practice and schooling, I still couldn’t get my music to flow well. I struggled with excess tension. My music sounded forced. And my hands and body were often sore. I got frustrated, and couldn’t see the way forward. Then, over the next decade, I studied with two other stellar teachers – one focused on the technical movements, and one on the musical (he was a concert pianist). In time, I came to discover a new set of formulas and movements. These brought new life and vitality to my practice. Now I help guitarists find more comfort and flow in their music, so they play more beautifully.
